SIRUA AULO WATER PROJECT: WELL CONSTRUCTION

by Sirua Aulo Water Project

Goal #1: Well Construction

JUNE 15, 2021 Update: We Did It! Step 1 is complete and a well has been drilled!

Thanks to the wonderful people who donated to this project, the first step is now complete!

Over the course of a week in mid-June, a well was successfully drilled at the project site. Students gathered around to witness water pouring out from the casing as a productive aquifer was struck at nearly 250 meters (820 feet) below the ground surface. Soon thereafter, a pump test was completed to confirm the productivity of the aquifer.  The well was observed to successfully provide 3,000 liters per hour ( ~13.2 gallons per minute). Students and staff retrieved water from the well and rejoiced as they experienced the reality of a once dream.

Next Step: we will test the water quality and construct the well casing. Read below to follow along our steps toward final well construction!

Sirua Aulo Water Project Overview

The goal of the Sirua Aulo Water Project is to provide reliable drinking water to the Massai community residing in Kapune region of Kenya by installing a water well on the local school's campus.

The Clean Water Project:

The Sirua Aulo Clean Water Project began with the hope that this academy's campus could host the reliable and sustainable water source for the region. It aims to reach the most people and provide relief to the students, staff, and surrounding community of Kapune - reaching 3,000 people.

What is the Construction Plan?

A water well will be constructed so that water can be conveyed to a secure storage tank located on the Academy premises to focus this water access to those working or learning in the school. Additionally, a pipeline will be constructed to convey clean water to a taphouse located downhill from the Academy to provide the rest of the local community with access to clean water as well.

Step 1: The driller will make an 8-inch (in diameter) hole 250 meters meters into the ground on the academy's campus.

Step 2: The well will be constructed using PVC, well screens, gravel backfills, clean soil, and cement grout.

Step 3: The conduit will be installed in the well to monitor the level of the groundwater over time.

Step 4: A steel vault will be installed in the base around the well to protect it.

Step 5: We will conduct a pump test to evaluate the performance of the well.

Step 6: The groundwater will be tested for contaminants to ensure safety of the community.

Step 7: The well will be disinfected after the test is complete.

3000 people will gain access to clean drinking water

We can make this hope a reality!
